Old Timey Fun in the Mountains!
A Visit to the Sapphire Gem Mine and Sweet Shop Village
A Visit to the Sapphire Gem Mine and Sweet Shop Village is a throw back in time. A wonderful treat which gives visitors a look into some of the rich history of the North Carolina mountains. Far of the road the Gem Mine sits under a canopy of shade trees and alongside a rambling creek. This natural setting along with a few touches of our own lets our visitors enjoy the true mountain mining experience in a setting which can only be described as serene.
When you walk into the shop, it reminds you of the dime store days, when you would go in a buy candy for the long walk home. They have every candy you can think of. A pleasant walk down memory lane!!
We want everyone who visits us here at the Village to have a safe, happy place to spend some time by themselves or with their families. On your way back to the flume area you will pass by our picnic area. We invite you to bring your lunch or pickup a snack in the sweet shop. Since you are in North Carolina, why not try an ice cold Cheerwine with a double decker Moon Pie.
What a wonderful time! I highly recommend for fantastic family fun! No gem mine compares… beautiful setting
Our Sweet Shop will help you remember days gone by. We offer hand dipped chocolates, world class fudge and a wide assortment of mixes and retro candy. They may not be a penny anymore but the memories they bring back are priceless.
If you like to play in the dirt we have a primitive dig site out back which yields mica, garnet and quartz and even some gold. It’s fun to dig up a bucket or two and run it through the sluice. Who knows what you will find (if anything) but hey, that’s the fun of it. This area sits back behind the mine and two dig sites have been dug out of the mountain and are heavily wooded. You may only be a few hundred feet off the road but you would think you were miles deep.
The Sapphire Sweet Shop and Gem Mine Village is a must see attraction and worth the trip. Make sure you bring the kids or the grandkids too, they’ll have a blast. The grounds are beautiful, and the candy shop is incredible, it’s like a step back in time. And I have to say the candy is VERY VERY GOOD.
So thanks for visiting our site. We are just putting the finishing touches on our backyard amphitheater and it should be done this week. We are also currently seeking storytellers and musicians to perform in the back. Please check back to see how it’s coming.
There is Always Something Fun Going On!
There is always something unique going on around our little village on the weekends. From Bear Carving demonstrations and classes to leather crafting and soap making our weekends are full of fun. Some kids love our creek walk and gem dig while others have a blast learning how to do mountain crafts. Take a look at our upcoming schedule of events and register as soon as possible as space is always limited. See schedule.
I took my wife and two daughters (14 and 6) to the Sweet Shop and Gem Mine, and we started with $20 buckets of gems for each girl. I’ve hit other mines in the mountains, and this had a better selection and size of gem stones than others I’ve seen, and most importantly, the kids had a great time.
From there we went inside to the sweet shop and got a chocolate milkshake for my older daughter, a marshmallow smothered in chocolate for the younger one, some fudge for my wife, and I had what they jokingly call “Monkey Poop,” which is a mix of the different ingredients left over from when they make the other treats. It was a wonderful experience all the way around, and we will be back.
Meet Some of Our Friends
We hit the gold mine with this place. We started out back mining for gems in the well shaded mining area. The owner was very friendly and great with our children. He helped us all identify our new found treasures. We topped off our adventure with ice cream and homemade chocolate covered treats, and enjoyed eating them on one of several picnic tables.
